Sexual harassment, teasing, and name calling are all different types of bullying. These are things that sometimes happen to gay people and bisexuals.
“There are a lot of people like this in the world, and some people just can’t learn to understand that,” says Pamela Smith a former student of Mary Bergtrum High School.
Eighteen-year-old Tyler Clementi of New Jersey is someone who died because of bullying. He died after jumping off of the George Washington Bridge on October 1, 2010. One of his roommates hung up a surveillance camera in his room and caught Tyler kissing another man on tape. This video was then posted on the internet.
When his roommate heard about his suicidal death, he was astonished that the video would lead to his death. The video was posted exactly one month before he died.
A similar incident occurred with 13-year-old Asher Brown of Hudson, Texas. Not only was he bullied because he was short and a Buddhist but because people thought he was gay.
One day at school one of his classmates pushed him down the stairs. The teachers and students claimed never to have seen it happen and never reported Asher being bullied. Two weeks later he shot himself.
Fifteen-year-old Billy Lucas from Greensburg, India has also suffered the horrible consequences of bullying at school. Many people in his school told him that he was gay and to go kill himself. When a bully in his class told him that he was “useless” he stood up and cursed at him. After that Billy got suspended.
About two days later he called 911 and told them he needed help. When they arrived his mom said that there was nothing wrong.
Two hours later his mom found Billy hanging from the rafters of their barn with a rope tied around his neck.
Tyler, Asher, and Billy all died because they were gay and bullied in school. None of these boys deserved to die but bullying pushed them too far.
Some people say the phrase, ''Sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you'' when people are teased or called names. But words can hurt just as much as fists.
Remember, to prevent more accidents like this you only have to do one thing...STOP BULLYING!
