Paint Me Like I Am

By: Sara Villeda Holmes
What I see daydreaming:
Looking into the chalkboard,
It looks like someone just erased it
But to me it looks like a dragon with spikes
Pushing their way out of the dragon’s body.
If you move your head
If you blink your eyes fast
It’s an elephant.
This poem is from a book of poetry with many sections like, “The Artists,” ”Friendship,” “I Too Am America,’’ “Why I Write Poetry,” “As We Sit There Furious,” and “The Tree That’s in Front of My House.”
If you take your time reading this poem and really think about it, when you’re done the message is really clear and I think it makes a lot of sense. The message is that you can see one thing, but if you change your perspective it can be something else entirely.
So if you ever have a problem, step back and look at it another way. Doing this could help you find a solution.
